  1. Margiata with Straw (2014)

If you are looking for a movie that represents Self-love and Acceptance, Margiate with Straw is your cup of tea.

Margiata with Straw is a story about a girl Laila, a young woman with cerebral palsy. Even with her disabilities, Laila was a great writer and musician who embarked on self-discovery as she moved from Delhi to New York to study. While in New York, she got involved in a band where she met a young activist named Khanum, a blind girl of Pakistan-Bangladesh descent with whom she fell in love and formed a deep connection.

  1. Dear Zindagi (2016 )

Dear Zindagi is a well-written movie portraying Therapy and Mental issues and how it's okay to seek professional help when dealing with mental health issues. It is about a girl named Kaira, a budding cinematographer who seeks a perfect life. She should be happy but she is not. Everything started to go downhill whether it came to relationships with her parents or partners which made her disconnected from her life. Until she decided to seek therapy and met his therapist “ Dr khan “ who helped her kaira to find her inner peace with his unique techniques which often led her to be confused during sessions. 1. Gehraiyaan (2022)

Gehraiyaan movie is about intimate and complex relationships in modern times. This movie revolves around relationship dynamics but the “ Alisha “ character played by Deepika  Padukone is a great representation of “Childhood Trauma and Anxiety”. Throughout the movie, you can see how Alisha's past is explored and revealed the traumatic events she experienced during her childhood and how they left deep scars that impacted her adult life and her relationship.

How her underlying situation with her father after her mother's death affected her childhood. Just like Alisha, people with childhood trauma always have a fear that they gonna end up just like their parents.

This movie dives into the psychological aspects of Alisha's life and how her past trauma influenced her behaviour, her decision making and her interaction with others. There are some mixed opinions about Gehraiyaan on the internet but still, it has great representation.

Top 5 Bollywood Movies That Explore Unique Concepts

Are you tired of watching typical Bollywood movies and want some new concepts to explore and watch? In this blog, I prepared a list of the Top 5 Bollywood movies that explore unique concepts.

1. Badhaai Ho (2018)

If you are looking for a unique movie concept that you haven't watched yet or probably never crossed your mind when it comes to Bollywood Movies, Badhaai Ho is your cup of tea.

Badhaai Ho is directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, it is a story about a couple in their 50s who ended up having an unplanned pregnancy and an exciting thing is that they already have two old sons which made the thing more awkward. They all were filled with many questions, like how they gonna reveal the news about a new member's arrival, what people would think about them, and how they gonna face people in society.

This movie going to keep you entertained just from the start, you going to see the POV of the sons, the older one, Nakul Kaushik and how hard it is for him to digest the fact that his mother is pregnant in his 50s and how he is going to tell this thing to his girlfriend and her parents. It is one of the movies that has such a unique concept that people find it hard to talk about and also has a great showcase of the society norms, middle-class families and how judgmental society can be.  It is a comedy movie with a touch of emotional factors. It is highly recommended.

2. LunchBox (2013)

Lunchbox is a very heartwarming story that talks about the friendship between a young housewife and an old man working in the dusk. This movie is based in Mumbai, it is a story about a young lonely housewife, Ila who happens to send the lunchbox to Sajan instead of her husband due to the accidental lunchbox mix-up. Sajan was counting the days till death as he had no will to live whatsoever but he had no idea that a simple mistake was gonna change his life. Throughout the movie, you will see how they will be connected through the letters exchanged through the lunchbox.

Lunchbox captures the unique concept of celebrating life’s unexpected connection and how to cherish and the importance of the human bond. One of the beautiful lines from the movie that hit

Just rightly “ We start forgetting things if we’ve no one to tell them to”. This line beautifully captures how people tend to keep their feelings when they feel unwanted or don't have any strong connection.

3. No Smoking (2007)

We all notice whenever we go out to watch a movie in theatres or even watch a movie at home, we always see the “smoking is injurious to our health” ad before the start of any movie but have you ever wondered if we have any movies related to the “ No Smoking “ issue in Bollywood?

No Smoking is a movie that captures the theme of addiction, free will and the consequences of one choice.  It is a story about K, the chain smoker played by one of the actors John Abraham who wanted to quit smoking at the demand of his wife as his marriage was on the rock because of his ego and self-consuming way.  Just to save his marriage he decided to quit smoking, However, during the journey of quitting smoking he got involved with Bengali Baba played by Paresh Rawal

The film borrows elements of surrealism, dystopia, and neo-noir which may seem way over the top during the first viewing but subsequent reflections unveil the eternal debate of individuality & free will. This movie had some mixed opinions when it came first but later it got the recognition it deserves.

4. Andhadhun (2018)

Andhadhun directed by Sriram Raghavan is one of the masterpieces which Bollywood ever created. If you are looking for a movie which gonna make you on the edge the whole time Andhadhun is the right choice for you. It follows the themes of mystery, thriller and suspense.

This story revolves around a young pianist player named Akash played by Ayushmann Khurrana who pretends to be blind to enhance his abilities. He was praised by everyone for his piano abilities as in the eyes of people he is a blind man but his world took a dramatic turn when he went to one client's house to play the piano and ended up becoming the witness of cold blood crime. He should be able to tell the police what he witnessed but it gonna cost him revealing his truth and even his life.

This movie might be boring for some audiences as its humour is strictly black comedy genre. It might not be your regular cup of tea but definitely worth of time.

5. Badhaai Do (2022)

If you are looking for LGBTQ+ friendly movie when it comes to Bollywood Movie there is some movie out there to watch But Badhaai Do took the LGBTQ+ concept and presented it in such a unique way.

Suman, played by the actress Bhumi Pednakar is the physical teacher in the school and she has a secret that she is lesbian. She is not out of the closet as she belongs to the very typical desi family. Her life took a turn when she met a gay policy man, Shardhul Thakur played by Rajkummar Rao because of some incident. Shardhul was just like Suman as they both weren't out of the closet and were getting persuaded by their family to get married. Shardhul concluded and asked Suman to get married so their family could be off their backs and they could live their own life after marriage and be able to meet people who are just like them but even after the marriage, it wasn't just easy as they thought as their families continue to meddle in their lives.

Badhaai Do bring attention to same-sex marriage, same-sex adoption, societal norms about LGBTQ+ and much more. It has some real factors and it is a comedy movie with an emotional touch. One of the exciting things is that it does have northeastern representation as well which is very hard to find in Bollywood.

There was a time when Bollywood was criticized for stereotypes and sliding the female characters but now definitely there is some evolvement when it comes to showcasing women's empowerment. In this blog, we are gonna talk about some of the movies that showcase women's empowerment just rightly.

Well here are the top 5 Bollywood Movies that Represent Women's Empowerment -

  1. Queen ( 2013)

If you are looking for a movie that celebrates women's strength, Queen is your cup of tea. Queen is a movie directed by Vikash Bahl about Rani Mehra, a girl from Delhi. She belongs to just a typical Desi family who later got ditched by her fiance just before the day of her marriage because after living in a foreign she wasn't his type. Rani always wanted to go to Paris, so she made a bold decision to solo travel to Paris as she and her fiance were going on their honeymoon after the marriage.

She had no idea that her trip to Paris was gonna change her life. During her trip, she encountered wonderful people, learned how to be independent, unblocked her potential and grew so much as a person. She was able to learn how to enjoy her life and able to gain confidence. Queen represents women's empowerment in such a beautiful and positive manner. Highly recommend the movie.

  1. Marry Kom (2014)

We still live in a society where stereotypes and norms against women still exist, one of them being that women shouldn't participate in sports. Mary Kom is a biographic sports movie that has a great representation of breaking barriers. It is a movie about the real-life story of Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, she was the first Indian woman boxer to win Gold Metal in the Asian Games in 2014.

This movie deserves all the recognition for showcasing women's empowerment, what challenges she faced in male-dominant sports and societal norms against women. It also shows how she balanced her life as an athlete and as a mother. The theme of the movie revolves around empowerment, dedication and inspiration. It was a great touch in Bollywood adding women's sports movies.

  1. Pink (2016)

Pink is a movie about three young single girls and how their night hangout changed into a traumatic event when they accepted dinner from a politician kid and his friends one of the girls bagged an alcohol bottle after a guy tried to molest her. When they went to file an FIR against them, people accused it was their fault as they were drinking, and decided to accept the dinner because they filed an FIR against the politician's nephew who had a very influential strong background. After seeing the situation a retired lawyer Deepak who had Bipolar, role played by Amitabh Bachan decided to take the case into his own hands to get justice for the girls.

Pink is the movie which gonna shows how our society always blames women and always considers it their fault. It delivers a very strong message of consent “ NO” means “NO”. A line said by Deepak “ “NO” is enough to refuse, no matter who it comes from a friend, girlfriend, sex worker or even your wife.”

It also conveys the message of how we judge a person just by their clothes, what kind of work they do etc.

  1. Tumhari Sulu (2017)

Tumhari Sulu is a light-hearted comedy movie about an ambitious and loving housewife living in Mumbai named, Sulu. Just like other housewives, she took care of household work, take care of family. With her remarkable lively personality and ability to connect with people truly, it didn't take her time to get famous. But it wasn't as easy as we thought Sulu faced many problems that working households face and also stereotypes faced by the women in society

Perceily, this movie did its best job in showcasing the frustration that working housewives face which can be relatable to many Indian women, how they are expected to handle both work and kids themselves. It is also breaking the stereotype that after marriage women should devote themselves to taking care of the family, not their interests and careers.

  1. Darlings (2022)

Darling directed by Jasmeet K Reen is a movie about a serious issue, Domestic Violence. It is about a girl named Badura and her lover Hamza.
